The DO’s and DON’Ts of Christmas Shopping

20 Dec

I don’t consider myself an expert in the concept of Shopping. In fact, I despise shopping with every fibre of my being. And Christmas shopping is indescribably painful. I don’t like crowds, especially hordes of people pushing me around. I don’t like walking around for too long and I absolutely hate standing in queues. But shopping is something most people have to do at this time of year. For those of you who hate Christmas shopping – and even for those of you who love it – I’ve put together a shopping guide to help you make this a fun experience.

DO make it a vibe

My man and I decided that instead of going to the nearest shopping centre, we’d make the journey out to Canal Walk. It’s bigger, there are more shops (therefore more surface area and less crowds – just a theory I had), more places to rest in between shopping. We decided to make it a vibe from the minute we got in the car, by playing awesome music. If you’re a fan of Christmas carols, the drive to your Christmas shopping destination is a great time to listen to some!

Canal Walk decided that they, too, would make it a vibe. They’ve set up a fake Snow hill for the kids. It’s quite cute and there was a little part of me that wished I was small enough to fit in one of those tubes and get pushed down the hill.

DON’T be ambitious

Even if you are a pro shopper, you need to take breaks and rest in between shops. Lunch breaks can be stressful if you aren’t good with crowds, so my suggestion is to avoid all food courts. We opted for Dros, and there were few people there, which meant our food came out quicker and it was a peaceful experience.

DON’T wear new shoes

It’s a schoolboy error I make every time I go shopping. Instead of being comfortable, I chose style. That was a mistake, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes that won’t give you blisters.

DO be a planner

We failed at this, which resulted in us walking from one end to the other and back. More than once. We also managed to buy our heaviest items first so we had to carry them around for hours.

DO buy presents for other people

I had an agenda. I knew what I wanted to buy. I even made a list. Unfortunately, I left the list behind (fail planning. See above) so I ended up buying more presents for myself than for anyone else.

Coffee & Chocolate Frappé

DON’T stress if you don’t have much time

For those of us who work full time, it’s difficult to find a day to go shopping. Weekends and public holidays are usually incredibly busy, and if you’re pressed for time, it’s not ideal. Most shopping malls tend to stay open until 7pm or 8pm (Canal Walk stays open til 10pm) during this time of the year.

Another helpful tip: Shopping at 6pm on Christmas Eve is surprisingly stress free. I did that two years ago and there weren’t many people there, so I didn’t have to worry about queues or being pushed around by other people.

Dros: Bacon & Avo burger and Chicken & Cheese Sauce burger

DON’T forget where you parked

Another rookie mistake I seem to make every time I go to Canal Walk. We made a point of remembering the N2 and the picture of the lion that was painted onto the pillar next to our parking spot, but we somehow forgot which door we walked through. We ended up walking from the A section and through three parking lots – with sore, tired feet – to our car.

Wherever and whenever you decide to do your Christmas shopping, we hope it’s a pleasant experience 🙂

3 series you might not have heard of but should probably watch

17 Dec

If you have some free time, you should definitely consider watching these series.

1. Community: A successful lawyer is discovered to be without a degree. He gets disbarred and has to get a degree before he can be reinstated as a lawyer. The series follows his journey back at community college. The character to watch out for: Senor Chang, the Asian Spanish teacher, aka the Asian mafia dude for The Hangover who was locked in the boot and jumps out naked. Need I say more…

2. Sons of Tuscon: Tyler Labine, aka the main character from the series Reaper, plays a character that is very dishonest and seems to have failed at life until three kids (brothers) approach him to be their fake dad so they can get into school (their real dad is in prison). The series is about this strange relationship and what ensues as a result thereof. The character to watch out for: Robby Gunderson, the youngest brother, is a strange child who seems not entirely socially adept.

3. Modern Family: This series has made me laugh out loud (lol) on many occasions. It is presented in a mockumentary style and follows the lives of three related families. With such diversity in the extended family, many humorous and awkward situations arise. A definite must see. The character to watch out for: Phil Dunphy, one of the fathers, always tries to be the cool dad and the social person; most times, though, his attempts to be cool lead to incredibly awkward and funny circumstances.

Anyone heard of Bruno Mars? And Katy Perry is doing it.

11 Dec

This guy, he’s different. While we have our usual pop stars doing the whole “sex and you are not perfect” message, Bruno Mars has entered the mainstream with an entirely different message. One of his single titles sums it up perfectly: Just the way you are. Bruno Mars is selling a message of “be who you are, because who you are is cool”. Bruno is pretty cool.

I like this message, because now I don’t have to feel fat and the need to strive for perfection because Bruno says I’m amazing just the way I am. And this will probably do much for many females as well. Instead of listening to Kesha, who says that you should brush your teeth with Jack Daniels, females can rest in the fact that all other girls have nothing on them according to Bruno in his song Nothin’ on you.

This will definitely be good for insecure people and give a positive message that is so desperately needed in the mainstream music scene. As long as people only hear the music. Just don’t let those people see the music video. That airbrushed girl in Just the way you are kind of reinstates the whole idea of “I like you just the way you are if you are airbrushed”. Don’t get me wrong though, the song is awesome and still has a positive message, here it is:

Now if Bruno sang his song to a fat chick who didn’t subscribe to mainstream standards of beauty, then I would give maximum respect. I guess mainstream never can fully be excluded.

Oh and Katy Perry is also doing it now with Firework. After kissing a girl and liking it, she has decided that everyone is a firework. She is telling everyone that they are worth something. Thanks Katy. Oh, and don’t try the firework thing coming out of your chest. That could end in tears.
